Jerkins observed that Gullah Geechee communities are continually threatened with dispersal due to the economic encroachment of corporations and wealthy white people. Gullah Geechee is a specific ethnic group of people descended from West African people who were forcibly brought to the United States as slaves. The Lowcountry is home to many Gullah Geechee people. The book’s first part focuses on the geographical region known as the Lowcountry, which covers parts of Georgia and parts of South Carolina. In researching this book, Jerkins traveled to various locations around the United States that have salient connections to the relevant history. Morgan Jerkins is a writer who focuses on Black American history, and she is interested in exploring her genealogical heritage, with the larger goal of understanding Black American history more fully. In the book’s prologue, author Morgan Jerkins writes about her parents, one of whom is from the New Jersey, and one of whom is from the North Carolina.
